What do Atlanta, Georgia and Tempe, Arizona have in common?
While the two cities are on the opposite sides of the United States with different climates and urban contexts, both will feature innovative new communities from real estate development company Culdesac.
Culdesac’s mission is to “build neighborhoods that embrace community, open space, and mobility.”. These developments highlight walkability in a higher density setting that features housing, local retail, and open spaces.
In Tempe, Culdesac is actively leasing apartments and opening new retail and restaurant spaces in the “mobility-rich, car-free” development. The project’s proximity to Arizona State University and location along the light rail network boosts its accessibility. DLBP Planner, Devynn Glanz, was able to observe construction of the project firsthand while studying at Arizona State University.
Meanwhile, work is underway in Atlanta on Murphy Crossing, a Beltline-adjacent, mixed-use community envisioned to include both market rate and affordable housing, retail, commercial spaces, and greenspace. Murphy Crossing’s accessibility to the Beltline creates easy access to a variety of local businesses and shops for cyclists and pedestrians.
Key to the success of the Tempe project was a swift approvals process, supported by city leaders who championed the development. We at DLBP understand that zoning and standard development requirements can often create a barrier for creative developments, and we look forward to seeing more projects following in the footsteps of Culdesac with key civic leaders on board.
