DLBP secures permission to redevelop a zero-carbon 64-bedroom care home in Mitcham, London

DLBP is very pleased to have secured planning permission on behalf of our long-standing client, Care UK, to redevelop one of its existing homes in Mitcham, London and provide a new, zero-carbon 64-bedroom care home.  The redevelopment will greatly improve and enhance the quality of living for its vulnerable residents, many of whom have dementia, to ensure that the modern standards and expectations of a care environment are met.

The new care home is an exemplary zero-carbon care home, whereby various measures are committed to such as 100% electric vehicle charging capacity, air source heat pumps, solar panels, promoting sustainable modes of transport, achieving greater than 10% biodiversity net gain, and contributing to the local carbon offsetting scheme.  The development pushes the boundaries and sets a precedent for what can be achieved by new care sector development.

Careful consideration was also given to the site’s historic sensitivity within a conservation area, with all trees being protected, as well as within the setting of several listed buildings

DLBP engaged proactively with Council officers, key stakeholders (including the Leader of London Borough of Merton Council), local community groups (including the local Heritage Society) and local residents.  During the process, we guided the design team in re-designing the care home to reflect local views and perspectives about how to preserve and enhance the character and appearance of the conservation area.

We were also able to explain the rationale for redevelopment, which was necessary to enhance the facilities and service provided to ultimately meet modern operational requirements for a care home that residents and their families expect.  Our engagement resulted in there being zero objections from local residents during the determination of the application.

It was a pleasure to work alongside KWL Architects, SLR Consulting, PLMR and HPC to secure this approval. We look forward to seeing this exemplary care home built out and congratulations to the entire team.
