How is the U.S state of Georgia preparing for its rising population?
Over the next 25 years, the Governor’s Office of Planning and Budget expects Georgia’s population to increase by almost 20%. The extensive growth will be fueled by the prosperity of Metro Atlanta, which is anticipated to expand into the northern communities of Georgia.
To accommodate the projected 2.2 million increase in population, planning and zoning policy will play an integral role in shaping sustainable communities.
The City of Cleveland, Georgia is one of many prime examples of a community that has sought to update their Unified Development Plan to include additions to its zoning ordinance. The additions include mixed-use zoning categories that promote large and small mixtures of commercial and residential development, comprising hospitality, medical, retail, and single and multifamily units. These planning and zoning policy changes reflect the City’s anticipation and welcome of growth.
